For personal and non-commercial use only. A single mother's life is turned upside down when her best friend vanishes in this chilling debut thriller in the vein of Gone Girl and The Girl on the Train.

It starts with a simple favor—an ordinary kindness mothers do for one another. When her best friend, Emily, asks Stephanie to pick up her son Nicky after school, she happily says yes.

Nicky and her son, Miles, are classmates and best friends, and the five-year-olds love being together—just like she and Emily.

A widow and stay-at-home mommy blogger living in woodsy suburban Connecticut, Stephanie was lonely until she met Emily, a sophisticated PR executive whose job in Manhattan demands so much of her time.

Stephanie knows something is terribly wrong—Emily would never leave Nicky, no matter what the police say. Terrified, she reaches out to her blog readers for help.

Then, she and Sean receive shocking news. Emily is dead. The nightmare of her disappearance is over. Or is it? Because soon, Stephanie will begin to see that nothing—not friendship, love, or even an ordinary favor—is as simple as it seems.

A Simple Favor is a remarkable tale of psychological suspense—a clever and twisting free-fall of a ride filled with betrayals and reversals, twists and turns, secrets and revelations, love and loyalty, murder and revenge.

Darcey Bell masterfully ratchets up the tension in a taut, unsettling, and completely absorbing story that holds you in its grip until the final page.

The problem? Utter cardboard cut-outs for characters. There is zero attempt to create real people that anyone could possibly identify with. It's readable, it's just very superficial and ultimately unsatisfying.

The Lord works in mysterious ways. And to further add a cherry to this sundae, the summary for this film directed by Paul Feig, for crying out loud , is labeling this as a neo-noir I don't know whether to keel over laughing or scratch my head in total bewilderment.

The only think that was laughable about this book was how bad it was. And they're dragging my man Henry Golding down with it.

Or maybe Hollywood saw this review and is secretly trying to troll me. I bet it's that. Cause lately, there have been a lot of Emily's liking this review Particularly the mommy blog lifestyle.

There can be a stark contrast between your public blogging persona and private persona you have at home, particularly when it comes to mommy bloggers.

Too good of a job, considering how awful she is. The author is a daycare teacher, but I secretly think she hates all adults and loves all children, hence making the adults as nightmarish as possible.

A book I read not to long ago, The Kind Worth Killing had one of the most deliciously sociopathic female characters I had the pleasure of reading.

However, I can honestly say that in this book, all the three main players are truly awful people. I kept flipping the pages with dread and horror, wondering what the hell they were planning to do next that would make me feel nauseous inside.

Sean is actually the least offensive of the characters. Stephanie is the mommy blogger bestie of Emily who has an aversion to meat and an obsessive love of veggie burgers.

She makes her son eat them so often that I am thoroughly convinced that he will soon turn into one. This one was the latter.

What the fresh hell is that??!!! In the case of Emily, you never get that from her. Was Stephanie Even Necessary to the Plot?

So then why the hell did they need Stephanie as part of their master plan? Were they really so stupid that they felt they needed to drag someone else into the story?

Jul 01, Laura rated it it was ok Shelves: read-in , crime-mystery-thriller. You are asked to pick up your best friend's son from school when an emergency at work arises.

It all makes sense anyway because your sons are best friends too. It'll be fine because she says she'll need to see her son after such a hard day so she'll be by tonight to pick him up.

What do you do if your friend never shows? Mommy blogger Stephanie is in just this predicament. She reaches out to her blog readers for help trying to figure out is this normal and should she be worried all the way to asking if anyone has seen Emily.

It is an interesting perspective with Stephanie having no one else to turn to. This allows a bit of introspection, a chance to see who Stephanie is and how she communicates.

I've read many novels at this point that use this device, but have seen none that used it as successfully as Bell does here.

Stephanie admittedly isn't always honest on her blog. This allows for an unreliable narrator in a unique way. At times Stephanie can feel a bit preachy and to be honest quite annoying.

But it's all in her character and who she is. At times, I definitely got Gone Girl vibes. Not in terms of Flynn's writing, but the plot.

We're given the whole is the character dead or did they run off type of story. Not to say this is a bad thing, but you know it will go one of two ways.

Luckily Bell manages to throw in a few additional twists to make it a bit more unpredictable. The problem is: is it too unbelievable? I do love my stories filled with secrets and twists.

Up to a certain point, I was really enjoying the story. This one veered a bit on the suspend your disbelief side of mysteries. And that VC Andrews-esque plot line is a bit much, eh?

Sure, I'm fine with some likeable characters, but with a story that's as big of high stakes as this, you need to be able to root for someone, but I was honestly rooting for the "villain" of the story because I wanted to scream every time Stephanie had page t 1 star.

But every time Stephanie went 'Hi moms' on her stupid blog I wanted to kill her. God, she deserved to be the "fish". Her affair with her half brother, their kid, her constant ramblings about how she missed her husband whom she cheated on for the better part of their marriage, her 'captain mom' avatar, everything was so maddening.

Most of all, h When I watched the trailer of this movie with a redhead Blake Lively, all shrouded in mystery and intrigue, I couldn't wait to get my hands on this book.

Most of all, her blind faith in Emily. It was like she wanted to be taken for a ride! Honestly, I've never seen a dumber character.

Emily was the kind of girl our parents warned us about. She was a bloody genius if you ask me. I do seem to have a crazy obsession with morally grey characters.

Sean was the only person for whom I felt anything close to pity. Poor guy should have known better than to marry a girl who wanted to watch Peeping Tom on their third date.

But jumping into bed with your wife's bestfriend immediately after her death which wasn't even proven at that point is a strict no, you dick, no matter how cray cray your wife was!

I'm pretty sure I'd never recommend this book to anyone looking for a good time. But, if you have nothing but time on your hands and want to read about twisted schemes played on gullible morons, go right ahead!

View all 8 comments. I'm also not much of an Anna Kendrick fangirl, but she nailed the Stephanie role and was oh-so-enjoyable. And Blake Lively? Well just look at her.

She didn't even need to speak to be the perfect Emily, but she was great too. The husband is dude from Crazy Rich Asians.

All I have to say about that is boiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiing! If I was a re-reader I would give this one a second go.

And then she never comes to pick him up because she is Gone. And then!!!! Not to mention the missing chick has some sibling issues as well that conveniently result in matching DNA!

Someone please tell me the movie was better than this. View all 16 comments. Feb 12, Jenno rated it did not like it Shelves: galley-copy.

Reminded me of Gone Girl, and I hated that book. Okay before I go into this review, I just wanted to say that when I saw the movie trailer for this I honestly wanted to read the book.

I mean my love for Blake Lively and Anna Kendrick definitely intrigued me to dive into this before I go see the movie.

However, after reading this.. I'll probably save my money and wait for it to come out on TV. Or Amazon. A Simple Favor had an interesting concept..

I honestly zo Reminded me of Gone Girl, and I hated that book. I honestly zoned out so many times and was trying to predict the ending 10 minutes into the book.

I totally predicted a ton of shit correctly beforehand so I was very pleased with myself. I don't even want to dive into the characters because they were so bland.

I didn't like any of them well maybe the kids but that's about it. Each person in this book was so weird, like beyond fucked up kind of weird. I didn't care about the betrayal, twists, turns, or the romance affairs.

Of course everyone has baggage and a past.. Overall, I just didn't like it. I'm glad that I didn't buy the book and got a free audio from my library.

Stephanie finally calls Emily's husband, Sean, who was in London to tell him his wife has disappeared and that she has been keeping Nicky.

Sean doesn't seem concerned since Emily said she was going on a business trip, but the problem is that Emily never returns from the business trip.

Sean, Stephanie, and the two boys spend a lot of time with each other until they find out the truth that Emily is dead. The characters were authentic, but it was difficult to believe someone could act that way and think of ways to hurt others.

I had my doubts about Stephanie's sanity and motives and about the life she lead. Stephanie was quite gullible and insecure.

Emily was a difficult one to figure out, a character I didn't like, and a character I grew to hate. She was conniving and evil.

Sean seemed like a nice enough guy that was caught in the middle of everything. The story line became quite intense and very good as the book continued.

The wrap up is amazing. A brilliant debut. View all 4 comments. Aug 10, Alli rated it did not like it Shelves: , hated-it. This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers.

Super Reviewer. Rate this movie Oof, that was Rotten. What did you think of the movie? Step 2 of 2 How did you buy your ticket?

Let's get your review verified. The second act drags a little, and a few character decisions in the third act were rushed a bit.

Overall, I'd recommend this. Verified Purchase. The trailer in the hinted at a unique plot twist. There is a twist, but the entire story line lacks credibility in the realm of human behavior.

Characters are unbelievably extreme, one being super-sweet and the other the devil in flesh form. A lot of bad language and behavior. Sorry I made the purchase.

Marvelous movie. When I first found out that this film was being made, I was quick to read the book in anticipation.

Fortunately or unfortunately? I recommend watching A Simple Favor if you enjoy fun, and somehow simultaneously serious, comedic-mysteries.

It really will make you notice and appreciate the talent these stars have. There is a lot of dark humor in this movie which is fine but after the first half, this movie rapidly descends into an irreverant batting away at sexual problems and death.

The dark humor becomes less and less funny. Is watching a woman get hit by a car funny in any way? Also, as long as this movie is -why the unbelievably rapid progress of relationships?

There is no use of time to develop a character or relationship. The second half just kind of crumples in on itself like a deflated balloon, not pretty to watch.

Too many twists and turns to the plot without any logic or depth. Did someone write this mess in one sitting? Cause it sure feels that way.

If I ever watch this again, it will only be for the gorgeous guy. I liked it. Sort of. It certainly draws you in and is creative and twisty then at the end it suddenly goes all high school on ya.

Like some cruel bait n switch and I was going wait The ending was far fetched, rediculous, and I expected Will Ferrel to jump out of the sofa.

Okay, I don't want to sound like one of those people that are upset at movies for not being exactly what they pictured of the book, however, the plot lines are completely altered.

Let me explain, I read the novel so quickly, in one sitting actually, it was extremely captivating and each character was so well developed.

The story arch was new and original in the book. Unfortunately, everything was changed in the film. The ending specifically. I won't go into detail but the book's ending left a whole world of intrigue where, in contrast, the movie was more on par with The Spy I Used to Date not a horrible film but definitely more comical and cliche than the suspense and mystery.

It was funnier than the book, no doubt appealing to a larger audience, but it was mostly disappointing. Each character was flawed in the book, they had complex stories and emotions, too bad the movie was an awful spark notes summary of their stories.

The actors were great, which is why I am so particularly upset by the bad script. This book had the potential for being such an incredible mind-blowing film.

I wouldn't recommend, the characters are flat at no fault of the acting , the plot is basic, and it just doesn't have the same feel as the book.
