Last year I was looking for a new show to binge so I checked out a best of list. This show was listed as one of the top tv shows of As a fan a fan of Lennie James from his various feature roles, in particular in the phenomenal show Line of Duty - I was intrigued.
I ended up binging this show and was amazed at the acting, the rawness of the dialogue and sequencing. I recommended a friend of mine from the uk check this out and he noted that the pub scenes were some the best captured on screen.
This show is a triumph that is markedly compassionate, tough, funny and sad all at once. YES to this show! You won't be disappointed!!
And props to Lennie James. Man can write and act like hell. His onscreen swagger makes for leading man bravado.
Really talented man. One star because it was a waste of my time binge watching. I definitely would not watch a season two. I thought the cast was good but the script was dark.
Too dark. The ending was just as dark. I felt like I wasted my time watching. One of the most original programs I have seen in a very long while, in league with Happy Valley or Mayday.
A reverse procedural, of sorts. Darkness looms in every moment, full of suspense. It will absolutely draw you in, and it will linger with you. It's exceptionally cast.

Unfortunately it wasn't. Lennie James plays Nelly, a social loser welfare type who spends his days in a pub full of other losers, he doesn't have a job, and leeches off of other pub regulars for a place to stay each night.
One night when he's crashing with a blonde from the pub who he's sort of seeing, the police kick down their door and arrest him for the abduction of his daughter.
He's never even met her, but they have evidence she's been contacting him. The girl's mother and he new partner are adamant he is involved.
He of course knows he's not, and is determined to save his daughter from whoever has impersonated him and has her. Sounds like a good show right. Unfortunately it just never reaches any heights.
You're expecting him and the other social losers to somehow come up with something those more successful at life couldn't to save the day. They don't, the others just mostly spend their time in the pub arguing and fighting with each other.
Nelly doesn't do a great deal either, but get frustrated and drink. None of them are likable characters, especially the girls mother who didn't even tell Nelly the daughter existed until she was three.
Each episode you're just waiting for something to happen to justify the high rating. Something clever, something memorable, but there's nothing.
Plus the series doesn't really end, obviously they left it open to make another season. If they ever make one, can't say I'll bother watching it.
