STAND BY ME - RUNAWAY VOR DEM ZUG - WIL WHEATON - RIVER PHOENIX - COREY FELDMANN - JERRY O'CONNELLThis review and rating is for the 25th Anniversary edition of the film. The movie looks great on Blu-Ray. I'm not electronically educated enough to advise on pixel rates and such; suffice to say the film looks brand new.
The special features is what really stands out about this version. First, there is a 35 minute plus feature with Stephen King, Rob Reiner and several of the actors discussing the film.
Fans are treated to some nice anecdotes and recollections from all involved. It's especially cool to see Keifer Sutherland talking about playing Ace.
And if you're like me and always wondered about Gordie's hat, the story is finally told. Second is a commentary track featuring director Rob Reiner.
But the best feature is the "picture in picture" commentary with Reiner, Corey Feldman and Wil Wheaton. A short reunion meeting betwixt the three proceeds the event.
The trio then discuss each and every scene of the movie, heavily laced with their own unique memories and takes on the filming process.
Of the three, Feldman really seems personable and natural; both Reiner and Wheaton seem a little too "Hollywood" for my taste. It's especially endearing to hear Corey Feldman talk about his absent friend River Phoenix.
Truly emotional; it's apparent the loss is still felt. Now, the problem is this: seeing the adult Wil Wheaton on the screen, blathering on with his egotistical, smarmy manner will utterly destroy your love for Gordy.
Normally I forget Wheaton is Gordy when watching the film, allowing full enjoyment to be had. But with adult Wil in my face while watching, eww!
You have been warned. So, when this first came out, I saw it in the theater and loved it. Now, as a parent I was looking for a movie that was not animated about young boys going on adventure preferably with some humor to share with my kids who were enjoying that particular genre e.
Dead boy notwithstanding, I thoughtthat"Stand By Me" might do the trick; although I was concerned that it might be a bit boring with the walking and talking.
Spoiler Alert - modern parents, be aware that We spent a lot of time talking about making, good, safe choices And in the end, the boys were very meh on the movie.
My mom made my sister and I wait until it came out on VHS before we could rent it. We must have rented it several dozen times before Mom cut us off.
I purchased the DVD version as a late Christmas gift to myself and I watched it last night with my two teenage daughters. I love it just as much now as I did as a 'tween and they really enjoyed it as well.
The story draws you in and you forget that these boys are just acting a part. The whole film was incredibly well done.
It is probably one of the best Stephen King film adaptations. I have noticed that there are several other reviews that comment on the language.
I feel that it was appropriate in the context of the film. Most of the year old boys that I knew used this same language when they were not around adults.
People that say they never spoke like this when they were younger are likely misremembering the truth. There are also some mildly violent scenes one concerning Ace, Chris and a switchblade come to mind.
Again, these are appropriate given the context. The most disturbing scene for me was when the boys found the dead body.
The actual shot showing the body was very short and it was tastefully done--a little blood but nothing gory. The end of the movie was also a little eerie, knowing what happened to River Phoenix in real life.

The picture looks absolutely lovely, I really like the cinematography, films the outdoors and the woods are among my favourite settings for a film.
The detailed lush green environment looks really great. The film is similar to It in several respects, the small town surrounded by woods, fears, dreams, troubles, a small group of underdogs, abusive parents, older bullies who are also violent delinquents.
In this film though there's no supernatural evil after anyone, the main dangers are man made, trespassing on railway lines, leeches, bullies and more.
The performances and characters are all good, quite believable a group of boys who act tough but are still children deep down.
The film absolutely nails the bravado, the bickering and the strong friendships that boys form at this age.
The dialogue is fast, messy and sounds natural. It is slow in parts but concludes in a satisfying end. It feels largely realistic and not too Hollywood.
The film is also broken up with a soundtrack straight from American Graffiti. The props and costumes really sell the period setting. Everything looks like it was filmed practically too another huge bonus, I can just picture the kids today running in front of some terrible green screen if this was shot today.
My main issue with the film is the complete freedom the boys have to just disappear for days. The parents are always conveniently removed from these kinds of stories to allow the adventure to happen.
The narration I'm not sure was really needed either to follow the story. The story begins some 26 years on when Autor Gordon 'Geordie' Lachance older - Richard Dreyfuss - younger -Will Wheaton reads his best friend of years gone by who he'd not seen for 10 years Christopher 'Chris' Chambers River Pheonix had died, memories of friendships and a journey come flooding back later it will be revealed Geordie was writing a book about it With friends Teddy Corey Feldman and Vern Jerry O'Connell , the four had grown-up in the small town of Castle Rock, Oregon.
A youngster in the town had gone missing, Vern had overheard his older brother tell a friend that he knew where the body of the boy was but because he'd been involved in a crime, Vern tells Geordie, Chris and Teddy what he'd heard, as it was coming up to Labor-Day weekend the four decide to try and become local heroes by finding the body and reporting it, decide to set out on a journey to find it.
This would be a time when the four would learn much about each other and indeed themselves. However, local hoodlum, bully and gang leader John "Ace" Merrill Keifer Sutherland had decided it would be he and his gang who would take the credit for finding the body of Ray Brower and not the four young friends.
Which when the time arrived would result in a stand-off, when the four, Geordie and Chris, in particular, would come of age by standing firm against the knife-wielding Ace and his gang.
A true coming-of-age movie that pulls you into the great friendship of the four youngsters and their individual personalities Certainly an older movie worthy of watching again perhaps like myself for the first time in many a day or indeed a first glance maybe.
The 4k upgrade is quite impressive given how old the film is. Worth a Viewing. Report abuse. First of all, the dvd is not bad, although I was looking for the blu ray not yet released then.
It is like a Goonies set in the past, without much play but with more introspection and true feelings. ANd although being a simple film, it is well written and directed, with a bunch of kids that would partially become stars, plus Richard Dreyfus in a quite emotional and sweet role.
It is King's most mature screenplay and Reiner's most unexpected film: he is the guy who brought you Harry met Sally, A few good men, The American President, Misery, and so on: a versatile director that usually makes comedies or thrillers, but this one is a mix of drama and light comedy basically meant to talk about growing up, during that suspended and somehow magical age that is early adolescence.
A film that is all filtered by memories of an apparently golden age and in that unique moment of the year for kids, that is summer when you are not supposed to face reality.
Instead here reality gradually pops out and change these kids, who realize that drama and death are part of life. All approached with a perfect balance and gentle touch.
Apparently not a big movie, but actually a very good one. Me and my family love this film so much about four young boys who all go through things together.
Their friendship for each other is what shines through throughout this film. I would highly recommend this film as it is awesome.
Be careful because tears may flow, and i mean your own. Definitely worth having a copy of your own. Wo kann man diesen Film schauen?
