Loved the concept, but didn't like the writing. This movie took the mash-up concept of Jane Austin and Zombies, and did it well.

Making a movie for people who love British film and television, but also have a sense of humor and don't mind an occasional Zombie.

In the original Pride and Prejudice book and movies, the sisters mainly talk and plot, but must allow the men to do most of the action due to the expectations placed on women in that time and place.

This film re-imagines the sisters as still having the social graces, but also having been trained in the martial arts, as if that was a normal thing, like learning fencing.

This is obviously a farfetched film, but it is fun for those of us who love British drama and humor, but also don't take ourselves too seriously and don't mind throwing an obviously ridiculous plot twist into a beloved Jane Austin classic.

Last night my wife and I went to see the just released Pride and Prejudice and Zombies at our local theater.

I loved this movie and more importantly my wife enjoyed it as well. And she is not a fan of the zombie genre of movies. In this version of 18th Century England, the countryside has been ravaged by a zombie outbreak.

But amid the carnage and eating of brains, life goes on and young women must endeavor to marry well. To better survive the ravages of the undead, anyone with means sends their children to the orient to learn fighting arts.

The wealthy send their children to Japan, and the wise send their children to China. The Bennet girls are alumni of the Shaolin temple.

And where in previous incarnations of Jane Austin young ladies are playing harpsichord and doing needlepoint, the young ladies of Pride and Prejudice and Zombies are seen sharpening swords and cleaning flintlock pistols.

I believe that Screen Gems has made a mistake in marketing this movie as an action-horror film. Yes the action sequences get a solid 9 out of And the special effects are equally as good.

But the truth is this movie is absolutely hilarious. When real dialogue from the Pride and Prejudice is given while girls are cleaning muskets and sparring, it becomes gut wrenchingly hilarious.

I would recommend this movie to anyone who enjoys their action, comedy and horror with some classical literature mixed in. Lily James did a good job portraying a strong and kick-ass Lizzie Bennet.

In this universe, zombies are to blame for countless deaths and considerable destruction. The entire landscape and the very course of human history has changed drastically because of this fact.

The elite class regularly sends their children to foreign countries so they can learn combat skills to aid them against future zombie threats. The subject of the undead is talked about daily by all I realize this is a "comedy", but the fundamental premise is flawed if zombies are ultimately treated like a joke.

Our main characters casually ride past a horde of zombie orphans one day A man asks his potential bride to give up her life of fighting because he can't tolerate the idea of having swords in his home.

This is utterly asinine and humorless to boot. I wasn't expecting grade-A material, but this is dumb. I wasn't sure I would like this movie, but I decided to give it a try.

I love Pride and Prejudice, I enjoy watching zombies thanks to The Walking Dead so I figured, why not watch something that combines the two.

I was pleasantly surprised to find that after 30 or so minutes into the movie I was actually looking forward to seeing how this would all end.

I rewound that scene a few times. While I was originally skeptical of what I thought would be a cheesy horror, tongue in cheek movie, was really very entertaining!

I did not care for the little clip after the credits, I thought that was unnecessary, I like my movies all tidily wrapped up, but overall I actually have the desire to watch this crazy movie again!

And shooting is the operative word: there is much more comic violence in this film than there is sophistication, though just enough of the elaborate manners of Georgian society as depicted in Miss Austen's book shows through for the contrast with the blood-and-guts of a Zombie movie to be amusing.

That is, of course, the entire point of the film. Quirk Classics this film version gets to spoof some of the famous screen adaptations of Miss Austen's novel as well.

Without wishing to give away any spoilers, let us say for example that Sam Riley who plays Mr Darcy gets some fairly gratuitous opportunities to spoof Colin Firth.

Riley's performance as Darcy is one of several great performances in the film, and one of two which might well have worked in a straight screen adaptation of the original Austen book rather than a parody, the other being that of Charles Dance Game of Thrones, The Imitation Game, Admiral as Mr Bennet.

For example. Matt Smith is much more the 11th Doctor Who in obnoxious-but-funny mode, and Lena Headey more like her Game of Thrones and much more like her Sarah Connor characters, than anything penned by Jane Austen.

Matt Smith is, however, particularly funny and often steals the show. The basic setting is in a parallel universe in which, for most of the 18th century, Britain has been under attack by Zombies, so those people who wish to remain alive have to learn zombie-fighting skills, so the Bennet sisters have been trained to fight Zombies much more than to appear like refined young ladies.

The approximate plotline of Jane Austen's novel is very, very loosely fitted into that environment. Don't turn the film off when the credits start.

There is a "shock ending" just after the cast list. The film is ridiculous - totally ridiculous - but it is well crafted and amusing nonsense.

Do not watch it expecting a serious B-movie horror film or any sort of introduction to Jane Austen: it is the combination of two utterly inconsistent genres as a joke.

It would be slightly unfair to Matt Smith, and one or two other actors who demonstrate considerable comic abilities in this film, to describe it as a one-joke film which manages to stretch the one joke out reasonably well for minutes.

But only slightly. This will probably be much funnier to people who have a good knowledge of Jane Austen and can recognise what is being spoofed than it will be to those who have never read one of her books or even watched a film adaptation of any of them.

Charles Dance plays the father of the girls all of wich have been trained in Chinese martial arts for there protection. Lilly James plays the oldest sister Elizabeth Bennet.

Sam Riley plays Mr Darcy Who is also a master in the martial arts and samurai swordsman ship. They clash right from the start and they fall for each other right from the start to.

The film sticks to the original story with the Zombies popping up all over the place creating all sorts of problems Douglas booth, plays Bingley, Darcy best friend I was totally stuck to the spot when I started waching this film it's 1 of those u start waching thinking are it's gonna be rubbish n u can't take your eyes from it n u end up rooted to the spot ,well in this film Whickham n Darcy have a showdown near the end of the movie but who will be triumphant with the twist to this tale.

The ending is quite touching, So I will only say give this film a chance the cast is to numerous to spell out but they all play there part to make this a great movie, 1 to cuddle up to your partner of an evening with a bottle n a warm fire for an entertaining film.

I find this to be a most excellent mash up of shaun of the dead and pride and prejudice i read before that in order to enjoy this you would have had to have seen or read pride and prejudice i don't see why myself but hay ho if you are the type of person who needs to see something different in there zombie films then this is the one for you i can't say to much but that are not zombies that i am wholly used to which is nice it is both funny as hell an still gruesome still think shawn of the dead but one thing i would have to state is this is not the sort of film that you should let the little woman in your house hold see as this will be most disagreeable to their soft an genteel nature an they would surely swoon at the sight of so much flesh on show lol.

Report abuse. I was in two minds as to whether this film was for me. I saw a few reviews of the film and the general take was that believe it or not it was actually quite a faithful version of the original text.

This is the sort of film that you could watch the trailer and see all the best bits included. Plus you have Matt Smith.

Now I never was that fussed for him as a Doctor Who, but I thought every line he delivered was done with great comic timing and he really did lighten the mood considerably.

Not bad, just a bit forgettable. There's a problem loading this menu right now.
