Clear your history. It premiered at the Sundance Film Festival. Four individuals sign up for a psychological research study only to discover that they are now subjects of a brutal, modern version of the Project MKULTRA indoctrination program.
They are each given a questionnaire to fill out. In the meantime, a researcher enters the room, ostensibly to give an overview of the study. Upon completing his introduction, the researcher shoots the female subject in the head with a gun and promptly leaves the room.
Over the next few hours, the remaining three male subjects will be subjected to additional physical and psychological brutality.
Only one subject will survive the ordeal. This subject manages to escape into the building. The loudspeaker gives details of where the subject is in the building.
It is then realized that the subject is going where he is supposed to be. He ends up in a room with two other males tied to their chairs.
I was not expecting that twist at the end. Reading it the second time I can enjoy the brilliance of it even more. Not only do the murders keep you reading, but the romance is page turning as well.

I The author has done another good job of mixing a mystery of the killings along with the relationship that is growing between Jake and Nicole.
There is also a good subplot dealing with Rick's deteriorating marriage with his wife. The banter between the gay Jake and the straight Rick as partners is realistic and enjoyable.
The lesbian love scenes are also very well presented. I also loved the relationship between Jake and her dog Cheyenne. I recommend this novel for its good combination of police procedural and love story.

I enjoyed Jake McCoy and found her to be a very deep and enjoyable person, someone I could be friends with, or even more. Nicole on the other hand, drove me nuts.

By the end of the book, I was thoroughly convinced that Jake was far too good a person for a shallow Nicole, who was still ruled by this secret mob, even after Jake risked her life for her, ultimately sacrificing her career.
I would recommend the book for plot alone, which was masterfully executed and kept you guessing until the very end. This was amazing and sad at the same time!!
What the Lieutenant did, Jesus Christ, talk about a monster with a nice smile. Maybe he was connected to that very shooting that led to Jake getting shot in the leg the first time.
I would rather get a beating everyday than do such an awful thing to my son!! And this Lieutenant, like Jesus, so effing sick, I am glad he died.

I'm glad I did. I read it 2 sittings, split only by the need for sleep and work. It was a page turner and essentially free from angst.
I figured the killer out part way through but not the reasons for why it all hung together, so the reveals were still enjoyable.
Dialogue was realistic and the two main characters certainly had chemistry. There's nothing not to like here, except I spotted someone else had read this recently and decided I needed to give it a go based on their enthusiastic review.

The investigation pulls the characters together in an unexpected story of a serial killer preying on women who's lives have already been horribly damaged.
The story of the investigation and crimes are well thought out and I was pulled in. Lots going on in this one!

Towards the end it became a little frustrating though and i was constantly like "please stop making assumptions and just talk to each other".

Even through all the horrible things happening I was left with a warm fuzzy feeling. Would love a sequel with these two, the ending was somewhat abrupt and leaves you wanting more.

I just started reading Gerri Hill this year and she is by far one of my favorite authors! Her many stories are compelling, interesting, dramatic and it keeps you involved throughout the whole book and leaves you wanting more The Killing Room brings us two main characters while still having time to involve side characters also.
Jake McCoy is at her cabin in the woods recovering from a gunshot wound to the leg, with her faithful companion Cheyenne.
Not only is she trying to heal her wound but al I just started reading Gerri Hill this year and she is by far one of my favorite authors!
Not only is she trying to heal her wound but also emotionally from the turmoil that caused the injury. Being an avid hiker she is trying to rehab by pushing herself more each day.
On a two day trek into the woods to visit the hot springs she meets Nicole who was on a journey herself. After getting "lost" trying to find the healing waters she comes upon Cheyenne trying to protect Jake from the unknown woman.
As Nicole asks if it is ok to proceed without getting mauled she sees Jake in the water, completely nude and all she can think is that she has perfect breasts.
An immediate attraction between the two women is hard to avoid and Nicole is ready to forget her problems at home to lose herself in Jake's arms.
After two days together, hiking, soaking, and fucking the women end up in Jake's tent. Everything is wonderful until Jake wakes up screaming about the shooting, Nicole calms her down and she falls back asleep, unfortunately for Nicole she gets scared and can't sleep.
A few more hours and Nicole gets up and gets her stuff ready to go convincing herself that Jake is a hired gun.
They leave each other awkwardly figuring to never cross paths again. As Jake gets back to work as a detective she comes upon a few murders that lead to a woman's crisis center and one of the doctors that they refer patients.
As Jake and her partner, Rick, go to interview the doctor, both Jake and the doctor are surprised to see each other again. The doctor is none other than the woman she spend two wonderful days with in the mountains.
Pretending they do not know each other, Jake convinces Nicole to help her with the case and share her files. As things in the case heat up, with a few more murders, all signs at least to Jake point to Nicole being the real target.
With absolutely no evidence, no leads, and no clue the case starts to reveal itself only to point in the direction of an inside man. As Jake tries to protect Nicole it becomes more obvious that she can't keep her duties as a cop separate from her feelings for Nicole that are steadily growing.
Knowing their relationship won't last as Nicole is in the circle of professional women and Jake is a lowly detective.
Profound story that keeps you interested and builds steadily until the climax of the case and the end of their relationship.
With neither woman wanting to bare their soul afraid of being hurt they part ways and have to decide what is more important, their image or their love?

I would like to see more of the characters in this book, where they go from here and how they develop. She seems to write stand alone novels with characters that would work well in a series format.
She also does a nice job of writing about hiking, mountains, hot springs and nature in general.
The scenes at the cabin were by far the best parts of the book. That's the positive. The negati I like characters in books and Gerri Hill does an excellent job of writing interesting and compelling characters.
The negative. The plot is weak. This doesn't take away from my enjoyment of the book, but it may for some readers. Gerri Hill writes great characters but her plots are really unrealistic.
I would highly recommend the book to people who get wrapped up in characters and see the plot as secondary to getting to know the people in the book.
