Um Selbstbewusstsein und Durchsetzungskraft zu tanken, muss sie letztlich ihre Traumreise durchleben. Einen weiteren spannenden Aspekt fügte Burton dieser völlig geschlossenen Welt nie lässt er sich auf eine Parallelmontage mit dem sitzen gelassenen Bräutigam ein hinzu: Alice reflektiert sich selbst.
Diese junge Frau glaubt zu wissen, dass sie die Figuren alle schon mal in ihren Träumen kennengelernt hat. Immer zweifelt sie die Wahrhaftigkeit des Geschehens und ihrer Protagonisten an.
Das führt auch zu der entsetzten Frage des Hutmachers, ob er denn gar nicht mehr existieren würde, wenn Alice aufwacht. Viele Kritiker machen hier den Einfluss des produzierenden Disney-Konzerns geltend, der immerhin ein Millionen Dollar Budget stemmen musste.
Als könnte man im Anschluss an den Sensationserfolg von Avatar nicht mehr darauf verzichten, flattern bei Burton jetzt verzauberte Insekten durchs Bild.
Diese selbstzweckhaften Momente tragen im Gegensatz zu Avatar aber nichts zur Handlung bei. Nicht von ungefähr wurde der 3D-Effekt auch erst in der Postproduktion allerdings auch auf Wunsch von Burton selbst als überflüssiger Marketing-Zuckerguss hinzugegeben.
Alice im Wunderland würde nicht funktionieren, wenn neben all der formalen Perfektion die Figuren blass blieben. Und hier zeigt sich Burtons wahre Meisterschaft.
Um Depp mehr Raum für die Entwicklung seines schizophren-liebenswürdigen Charakters einzuräumen, wurde die Rolle des Hutmachers deutlich ausgebaut.
Mit einem irren Kostüm, ständig wechselnden schottischen Akzenten, digital bearbeiteten Augen, tonnenweise Make-Up und einer orangenen Lockenpracht darf Depp ganz im Stile von Charlie und die Schokoladenfabrik die Exzentrik seiner Figur auf die Spitze treiben.
Bonham Carter wiederum gibt mit ihrem Riesenkopf eine wunderbar-eigenwillige und hoch amüsante Antagonistin ab. Tim Burton gelingt mit Alice im Wunderland eine originelle, liebenswürdige und völlig eigenständige Neubearbeitung des Stoffes.
Die Welt, die er mit Hilfe von perfekten Tricks, fantastischen Kostümen und einem herrlich verspielten Score von Haus- und Hofkomponist Danny Elfman erschafft ist modern in der Aussage und trotzdem ein Aufruf, das wunderbare Kinderbuch von Lewis Carroll noch mal aus dem Schrank zu ziehen.
